I heard from NTV7 and TV3 news that Tan may be freed today and Syed Hamid said that one of the reasons for her arrest was for her own safety. Well if that isn’t one of the most illogical things I’ve ever heard … no one (AND I MEAN NO ONE) ever gets detain under ISA for their own safety. Any one who’s concern for their safety could just hire a personal bodyguard.
At the outset, Tan should never have been subjected to the trauma of being detained under the ISA. This is a case of detaining the messenger when the perpetrator gets away scot free.
Home Minister Syed Hamid Albar said today that Sin Chew Daily senior reporter Tan Hoon Cheng may be released from Internal Security Act detention as early as today.
According to Star Online, Syed Hamid also did not rule out further arrests but said that further police action was “not expected”.
Tan, 32, was detained in Bukit Mertajam last night as part of a nationwide ISA dragnet. She is currently being held at the federal police headquarters in Bukit Aman, Kuala Lumpur.
Her involvement was allegedly linked to her article which quoted Bukit Bendera Umno division chief Ahmad Ismail who sparked the ‘Chinese squatters’ debacle.
Representatives of the National Union of Journalists (NUJ) are trying to visit Tan in Bukit Aman today.
