Every year this blog presents the ANAK BANGSA MALAYSIA AWARD to individuals or groups who have made the most impact in the country in terms of socio-political activism and human rights and have made a difference in the lives of all Anak Bangsa Malaysia. This year there were many close contenders and it was difficult to decide. This blog however after much deliberation decided that the ANAK BANGSA MALAYSIA AWARD 2008 goes to…….
COURAGEOUS MALAYSIANS who brave their freedom and safety, who come rain or shine congregate in PJ, Penang, Seremban and other locations holding candlelight vigils in solidarity with RPK and all other ISA detainees.
This year’s award goes to all who attend the weekly candlelight vigils in several locations throughout Malaysia. – THE CANDLE LIGHT VIGILERS
A very special mention also goes to HINDRAF who are able to mobilise and raise the consciousness of a whole community and empower them within such a short period of time. This is unprecendented in probably throughout the country’s history.
And also to the Oppressed Peoples’ Network (Jerit) cyclists and activists who themselves became the most oppressed group in facing unprecedented serial harrasment again and again and …… in their ‘cycle for change’ campaign. At the time of this writing, the writer still anticipates much more harrasments, arrests and detentions as these cyclists make their way from Perak and Melaka to Kuala Lumpur.
